Dental Hygienists have a much higher prevalence of hearing problems then others, according to a survey amongst this occupational group.
The American institute NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) studied experienced dental hygienists who had been practicing for a minimum of 20 years and found a relationship between hearing damage and occupational noise exposure.
The researchers found that long-term exposure to the noise of dental equipment, such as ultrasonic scalers, may contribute to hearing difficulties. The percentage of dental hygienists with hearing problems is, therefore, much higher then the American average.
